Head Coach Adam Denton announced on April 29 that Jesse Newton has joined the Richmond Spiders women’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2026 fall season.

Newton, who is from St. Petersburg, Florida, brings experience at collegiate, youth, and international levels. Most recently, she served as an assistant coach and director of player development at Oakland University. At Oakland, she was involved in recruiting, training sessions, match preparation, and individualized player development plans. She also oversaw video analysis and contributed to improvements that led the program to reach the Horizon League semifinals.

“We’re excited to welcome Jesse to the Spider family,” Denton said. “From the very beginning of the interview process, it was clear that she would be a great addition to our staff. Jesse is passionate, hardworking, detail-oriented and has a strong understanding of the challenges student-athletes face at a high-academic institution like Richmond. She is committed to developing our student-athletes not only as players but more importantly as people. Jesse’s experience as both a player and a coach will be a tremendous asset to our program, and she will be involved in all aspects of the team including individual player development, recruiting, scouting and training curriculum. Go Spiders!”

Before joining Oakland University’s staff, Newton worked as a graduate assistant coach at Lynn University and remained active in youth soccer with Michigan Jaguars FC and Olympic Development Program East Region.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to join the University of Richmond women’s soccer coaching staff,” Newton said. “Coach Denton and his staff have built something special, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. With his experience, competitive mindset and leadership this program is continuing to grow toward a championship level. I’m beyond excited to bring my energy passion and experience to Richmond and get to work.”

Newton played collegiate soccer at Presbyterian College before using her fifth year of eligibility at Lynn University while earning her master’s degree. She then played professionally with MSV Duisburg in Germany during the 2023-24 season where she appeared in 14 matches with two assists as a defender.

While playing overseas Newton also coached MSV Duisburg’s U15 squad helping guide them to a league championship by contributing during training sessions and match preparation.

Newton holds degrees from Presbyterian College (history) and Lynn University (MBA). She has earned her U.S Soccer Federation “D” License with plans underway for her “C” License.
