Freshman Carson Looney finished as runner-up and helped lead the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams men’s golf team to a third-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Orlando, Fla., according to an April 29 announcement.
The results highlight Looney’s strong debut season, with his performance playing a key role in the team’s overall placement. The tournament took place at Evermore Resort and Golf Club on a par-72 course measuring 7,085 yards.
Looney recorded rounds of 67, 71, and 69 for a total score of nine under par across three days. His final round of three-under-par secured his second-place position throughout the event. Richmond’s Lucas Rizo-Patron won individual honors with a score of thirteen under par after shooting a final-round 66. The VCU team finished even par on Wednesday but was overtaken by Richmond, which posted fifteen under par that day to claim the team title. George Mason placed second at four under par.
Senior Zach Felts finished tied for twentieth with a four-over-par total after shooting an even-par round on Wednesday. Sophomore Tanner Cadieux and senior Mason Minkel both tied for twenty-fourth at five over par; Minkel carded a one-under-par round in the final day.
VCU has maintained consistent performance since joining the Atlantic 10 Conference before the 2012–13 season, never finishing worse than fourth place in this championship event during that period.
Looney ranked among the top five competitors in both Par-4 (3.90) and Par-5 (4.50) scoring for the week and made thirty-nine pars—second most among all players in the field. He also had only three bogeys over fifty-four holes while registering twelve birdies—the best mark on his team.
