Advocates, survivors, and local officials gathered at the Chesterfield Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court for the Ninth Annual Go Purple event, marking Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event was organized by the Chesterfield Domestic Violence Task Force (CDVTF), which brings together law enforcement, victim advocacy groups, offender services, educational institutions, and community service providers to coordinate resources and improve responses to domestic violence in Chesterfield.
Speakers at the event included individuals who have experienced domestic violence. They shared their stories to highlight the challenges faced by survivors and the importance of ongoing community support. Jeremy, a father of a local domestic violence victim, addressed attendees: “This has been a long journey. I am nervous and anxious and sad and inspired all at the same time.”
The program also recognized Grace Kerstetter, Senior Family Services Specialist with Child Protective Services (CPS), with the 7th Annual Outstanding Service Award for her work addressing domestic violence. Laura Beth Spaulding, Victim Services Case Manager from the Chesterfield Domestic and Sexual Violence Resource Center, said: “Her knowledge and skill, in regard to the aspects of domestic violence, allowed her to go way above and beyond her regular duties.” Spaulding added: “Grace has paved the path with support, understanding, acceptance, determination, and well grace.”
The Carolyn Miller Memorial Fund was highlighted as an initiative providing emergency financial aid for those fleeing abusive situations. The fund assists with costs such as transportation and temporary lodging.
Jeremy expressed gratitude toward those involved in supporting victims: “To all the people who are in the task force, who are encouraging, supporting, and holding people accountable I sincerely appreciate it.”
In 2024, there were 8,055 calls related to domestic violence received by Chesterfield’s Emergency Communications Center. The Chesterfield County Police Department made 1,426 arrests connected to these incidents. Of those cases handled by law enforcement that year, 1,340 were prosecuted by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. Additionally, 1,027 victims received help from the Chesterfield Victim Witness Assistance Program; 438 perpetrators were placed on probation; and 713 survivors were assisted by the Chesterfield Domestic Violence Resource Center.
As part of its efforts during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CDVTF is urging residents to participate in events or donate to survivor services while learning more about abuse prevention.
