Chesterfield County is set to commence construction on a new animal shelter this month. The facility aims to expand capacity and enhance services for the community’s animals and potential adopters.

The new shelter, located at 9531 Government Center Parkway, will significantly increase its size from 10,430 square feet to 30,990 square feet. It will feature a full veterinary and surgical center, separate lobbies for intake and adoption, indoor meet-and-greet rooms, a laundry area, large capacity food and storage supply, among other facilities.

Enhancements to outdoor spaces include 10 covered dog runs and two designated meet-and-greet yards designed for animal exercise and adoption interactions in a comfortable setting. Additionally, a 1,400-square-foot barn will cater to extra outdoor housing needs.

All enclosures in the new facility will be on one level. This design eliminates the need for double-stacked dog runs to ensure safe and humane housing of animals. Stainless steel cages with internal plumbing are planned for durability, improved hygiene, and ease of replacement as necessary.

The project is slated for completion by the end of October 2026.
