Chesterfield County Public Schools and the Chesterfield County Police Department have issued a joint message ahead of the start of the new academic year, urging the community to drive safely as students return to school.

The statement highlights increased traffic and changes in routines that come with the beginning of school. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors, Chesterfield County School Board, police department, and public schools have been working together to address expected traffic challenges near schools. Leaders from both the police and school division have coordinated efforts to prepare for these changes.

“Every child deserves a safe journey to school, and every parent deserves peace of mind as they send them on their way. The start of school brings increased traffic and new routines, and we ask for your support.”

“Police and school division leaders have been coordinating to anticipate and address potential traffic challenges around our schools. While the beginning of the school year naturally brings more cars and pedestrians, our approach is centered on encouraging patience, vigilance and cooperation from everyone.”

“The well-being of our students is a responsibility we all share. We ask for everyone’s cooperation in following traffic rules and taking extra care, being mindful that some people will be unfamiliar with new routes and procedures.”

Community members are encouraged to follow posted speed limits in school zones, stay alert for buses and pedestrians, allow extra time during arrival and dismissal periods due to heavier traffic, and follow directions from staff or law enforcement managing traffic flow.

“The safety and well-being of our students is a top priority. With your help, we can ensure that the start of the school year is safe, smooth and successful for every Chesterfield County family. Thank you for your continued partnership.”
