The Department of Public Works in Richmond will hold a public meeting on November 18 to discuss the Shockoe Valley Streets Improvement Project. The event is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. at Main Street Station, located at 1500 East Main Street.
City officials, transportation planners, and engineering consultants involved in the project will be present to provide information and gather community input. The planned improvements focus on enhancing safety and accessibility for all users in the Shockoe Valley area, including Oliver Hill Way, 18th Street, Venable Street, and Mosby Street.
According to the project description, Oliver Hill Way and 18th Street will be converted from one-way to two-way streets. Upgrades include shared use paths and cycle tracks for cyclists to complete the area’s network. New sidewalks with street trees, decorative lighting, and other features are planned for pedestrians and people using mobility devices.
Four landscaped roundabouts are designed to calm intersections at Oliver Hill Way and Venable Street; 18th Street and Venable Street; Mosby Street and Venable Street; as well as Mosby Street/East Leigh Street/O Street. These changes aim to improve safety for all ages and abilities. Broad Street will also be redesigned to connect the existing streetscape from 14th to 21st Streets.
The project’s stated goals are to improve safe access for everyone regardless of age or ability, enhance circulation within the urban grid, support environmental sustainability by offering transportation options, foster economic development opportunities, and align with both current and future land uses through a walkable street grid.
Attendees at the meeting can review preliminary design plans, learn more about proposed roadway improvements for pedestrians and cyclists, and share their feedback directly with project planners and city staff.
