County leaders, school officials, and community members gathered on Wednesday, July 23 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Deep Creek Middle School. The school is designed to accommodate 1,800 students in Chesterfield’s rapidly growing area.
“Today we will open the 13th middle school in Chesterfield County,” said School Board Member Steven Paranto (Matoaca District). “With it comes new traditions, new possibilities, and a renewed commitment to student success.”
Located along the western Route 360 corridor, this three-story, 254,000-square-foot facility symbolizes vision and public investment. “Providing modern, innovative, and engaging environments is key to maintaining our commitment to excellence,” stated CCPS Superintendent Dr. John Murray.
“This is a proud moment for our county,” Paranto told attendees. “One that reflects what we can accomplish when we invest in our future, our children, and our schools.”
The school’s location supports broader infrastructure improvements like extending Westerleigh Parkway and adding a roundabout on Otterdale Road to enhance safety and traffic flow.
Designed to relieve overcrowding at Tomahawk Creek Middle School nearby, each grade at Deep Creek has its own floor with classrooms and science labs. Students also have access to a gymnasium seating 1,200 people, an auditorium for 1,000 people, and a media center promoting literacy.
“With more than 64,000 students in our school division,” Murray explained further.
An exploratory wing allows students to pursue interests through electives such as art or technology courses.
“This school is more than bricks-and-mortar,” emphasized Paranto again. “It represents our values…our vision for twenty-first-century education.”
Constructed using funds approved by voters via a bond referendum back in ’22—the Chesterfield County Board worked closely alongside their counterparts from both sides throughout planning stages ensuring swift completion addressing capacity concerns expressed during public forums held earlier this year too!
