The VCU Rams women’s track and field team won eight medals during the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, held at George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va., according to a May 3 announcement. The team finished third overall with a score of 96.5 points.
The event saw strong performances from the Rams across multiple disciplines. In sprints and hurdles, one junior athlete won gold in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.76 seconds and also secured bronze in the 200-meter dash at 24.56 seconds. Another athlete finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles after setting a personal record of 13.91 seconds during preliminaries and completing the final in 14.41 seconds.
Relay teams also contributed to the medal tally, with the women’s 4×100 meter relay squad taking gold with a season-best time of 46.14 seconds, while the women’s 4×800 meter relay team posted their best season time at nine minutes and twelve point fifty-six seconds.
In field events, one junior earned silver in long jump with a personal record leap of five point ninety-four meters, while another took bronze in triple jump by reaching twelve point eighteen meters for her best mark this season. The throws division added further success as two athletes claimed gold and silver respectively in hammer throw, recording distances of sixty point twenty-three meters and fifty-eight point twenty-five meters.
This championship marks the end of competition for most members of the VCU Rams women’s track and field team this season; however, select athletes will continue on to compete at the NCAA East Preliminary Round scheduled from May 27 until May 30 in Lexington, Kentucky.
