VCU Women’s Tennis had five student-athletes recognized with Atlantic 10 Conference honors, according to a May 11 announcement from the league. Head coach Rifa Kahfiani was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
The recognition highlights the performance and achievements of both players and coaching staff during a successful season for VCU. The team secured back-to-back Atlantic 10 Championship titles and earned another NCAA Tournament appearance under Kahfiani’s leadership.
Sofia Thorne, who played at Court 1 throughout the season, posted a singles record of 13-8 and a doubles mark of 15-6. Thorne added this honor to her previous accolades, including two Atlantic 10 Player of the Week awards this season, selection to the preseason all-conference team, and ITA Scholar-Athlete recognition. Isabel Andrade finished with an 11-5 singles record and was also selected to the first team after earning multiple weekly awards during her career. Andrade held a lead against Duke in NCAA Tournament play before her match went unfinished.
Another player completed an 11-8 singles campaign with key clinching victories in important matches such as those against Appalachian State and Richmond in tournament semifinals. She has received several conference recognitions over recent seasons as well as academic honors. Magallanes earned second-team honors after posting an impressive record in both singles (11-5) and doubles (15-6), going undefeated in conference doubles play at 8-0. Alba also received second-team recognition after finishing undefeated in conference play for both singles and doubles while achieving academic distinctions.
Kahfiani led VCU to collect six all-conference honors this year along with seven Atlantic 10 Player of the Week awards across her roster. The team’s consistent results have contributed to its continued success within both conference competition and national tournament appearances.
