Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed issues ranging from federal government operations to Indigenous Peoples’ Day in a series of posts on her official X (formerly Twitter) account.
On October 12, 2025, McClellan commented on the ongoing federal government shutdown and its impact on Americans’ health insurance. She wrote, “Republicans shut down the federal government rather than prevent skyrocketing insurance premiums for millions of Americans. Read my latest column in @RTDNEWS https://t.co/HKE1oWEkW1”.
The following day, October 13, McClellan marked Indigenous Peoples’ Day by highlighting the long history of Native American communities in Virginia. She posted, “Long before explorers landed on the shores of North America, several distinct groups of Alqoquian, Siouan and Iroquoian-speaking people lived in what became Virginia. This #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we honor their history, culture and resilience. https://t.co/GpSsH5Exfv”.
Also on October 13, she drew attention to the official recognition of Virginia’s Native tribes by the federal government. She stated, “Today, the federal government officially recognizes seven tribes in Virginia as sovereign nations. Learn more about them here: https://t.co/TraAXUPXgC”.
McClellan has represented Virginia’s 4th District in Congress since 2023, succeeding Donald McEachin. Before her election to Congress, she served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017 and in the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1972, she currently resides in Richmond. McClellan holds a BA from the University of Richmond and a JD from the University of Virginia.
