Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, has been vocal on social media about her views on Medicaid and the proposed changes to health care legislation. Her recent tweets address claims about Medicaid recipients and provide insights into ongoing legislative battles concerning health care policies.
In a tweet dated May 13, 2025, McClellan refuted accusations that Medicaid subsidizes individuals who choose not to work. She stated, “Any claims that Medicaid subsidizes freeloaders who ‘choose not to work’ and ‘leech off the government’ are complete bogus — and an insult to the millions of Americans who support Medicaid.” She emphasized that nearly all Medicaid beneficiaries are employed or have valid reasons for not working.
On the same day, McClellan highlighted the ongoing struggle to preserve Medicaid amidst legislative changes. She noted in another tweet that this battle would reach a critical point when the House Energy and Commerce Committee meets to discuss Republican health care proposals. As per her statement, “The fight to save Medicaid has been ongoing for months. It comes to a head tomorrow at 2 PM…” She reiterated her commitment from her time as a state legislator to her current role in Congress.
Further expanding on this issue, McClellan expressed concern over a new Republican bill targeting health insurance coverage for millions by altering Medicaid provisions. On May 13, she tweeted about the impact of these legislative efforts: “House Republicans dropped their bill to kick over 13.7 million people off their health insurance by gutting Medicaid…” She joined prominent figures like Michael Steele in discussions about these developments.
Jennifer McClellan has served in Congress since succeeding Donald McEachin in 2023. Prior to this role, she was part of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006-2017 and also served in the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she holds degrees from both the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia School of Law.
