Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district, recently took to social media to address critical issues affecting public health and safety. McClellan has been active in Congress since 2023, following her service in the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate.
On June 3, 2025, McClellan tweeted about her efforts to protect the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). She expressed concern over the Trump Administration’s actions that she believes hindered SAMHSA’s effectiveness. In her post, she stated: “While the SUPPORT Act should help address the substance abuse crisis, the Trump Administration’s gutting of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration makes it impossible to implement.” She further mentioned offering an amendment aimed at safeguarding SAMHSA and its workforce.
In a subsequent tweet on June 3, McClellan provided a link for viewers to watch her full amendment proposal. The tweet simply read: “Watch my full amendment here:” directing followers to view her detailed explanation via a video link.
Later on June 4, McClellan addressed gun violence as part of Gun Violence Awareness Month. Highlighting its impact on Black communities, she noted: “Gun violence is a public health epidemic, and it disproportionately devastates Black communities.” She co-anchored a Special Order Hour with The Black Caucus to call for legislative action against gun violence.
Jennifer McClellan was born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1972 and currently resides in Richmond. A graduate of the University of Richmond with a BA and holding a JD from the University of Virginia, she has served as an influential political figure within Virginia since her early career days.
