Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to highlight food insecurity issues and challenges facing rural communities in her district.

On August 8, 2025, McClellan posted about the Surry Market and its significance for local residents: “Before Surry Market opened 11 months ago, Surry County had no grocery store for nearly 25 years. Becoming a SNAP/EBT retailer helps them provide fresh food to the community, especially seniors. SNAP cuts will hit rural communities like Surry particularly hard.”

Later that day, she addressed efforts during National Farmers Market Week to discuss food access with local stakeholders: “To close out National #FarmersMarketWeek, I held a roundtable with food bank, farmers market and school nutrition officials to discuss how the Big Ugly Law and actions of the Trump Administration make it harder to feed vulnerable populations. McClellan has served in Congress since 2023 after replacing Donald McEachin and previously held seats in both the Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate. Born in Petersburg in 1972 and currently residing in Richmond, she holds degrees from the University of Richmond (BA) and University of Virginia (JD).

Her recent posts come as debates over federal nutrition assistance programs continue. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a critical resource for many low-income families nationwide; reductions or policy changes can have significant impacts on rural areas like Surry County that have faced limited access to grocery stores for decades.
