Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, marked the 90th anniversary of Social Security with a series of posts on her official X (formerly Twitter) account.
On August 14, 2025, McClellan stated: “Social Security turns 90 today, providing a lifeline for over 150,000 residents in VA-04. Yet the Trump Administration’s Social Security Administration reorganization, workforce cuts, website crashes, limits on phone services and elimination of paper checks are making it harder https://t.co/olcwdapMzn”. This post highlights both the importance of Social Security to her constituents and her concerns regarding administrative changes that she attributes to the previous administration.
McClellan also shared additional posts related to Social Security and its milestone anniversary. On August 13, 2025, she posted a link: “https://t.co/oHn1f5SJll”. The following day she posted another link: “https://t.co/OY85HHsgPt”.
Jennifer McClellan has served as the representative for Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, succeeding Donald McEachin. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017 and also served in the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg in 1972 and currently residing in Richmond, McClellan holds degrees from the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia.
Social Security was established in 1935 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program. It remains a critical source of income for millions of Americans—including over 150,000 residents in Virginia’s 4th district—particularly retirees and those with disabilities.
