Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan of Virginia recently took to social media to express her concerns regarding the SAVE Act and its potential implications on voting rights. McClellan, who currently represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, highlighted several issues raised by the act.
On April 10, 2025, McClellan tweeted about the limitations imposed by the SAVE Act. McClellan stated, “Under the SAVE Act, you CANNOT use your Virginia driver’s license alone to register. Voters with a military ID must also present their service record alongside their ID. Roughly 40% of Virginians do not have a valid passport, so the SAVE Act could force Virginians to pay over.”
In another tweet posted the same day, McClellan addressed the challenges faced by women who have changed their last names after marriage. She noted, “If you’re one of the millions of women who changed their last name after getting married, your right to vote could be impeded by the SAVE Act. In Virginia, an estimated 1.8 million women have a name that doesn’t match their birth certificate.”
Additionally, McClellan mentioned administrative hurdles in acquiring necessary documentation. In her tweet, she reported, “Getting the approved documents to prove your citizenship isn’t instantaneous, either. A constituent called my office to say she’s been waiting over six weeks for Virginia officials to process her request for a birth certificate. The SAVE Act places these kinds of delays on.”
Jennifer McClellan has served in Congress since 2023, having previously filled the seat of Donald McEachin. She was born in Petersburg, Virginia, in 1972, and has an academic background with a BA from the University of Richmond and a JD from the University of Virginia.
