Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, recently shared her concerns on social media regarding a new healthcare plan proposed by House Republicans. The tweets outline potential impacts on Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
On May 13, 2025, McClellan tweeted that “Last night, House Republicans released their plan to gut Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act — closing hospitals, blowing a hole in state budgets, and ripping away health care from MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.” She expressed apprehension about the repercussions of this plan on public health infrastructure.
In a subsequent tweet posted moments later, McClellan highlighted findings from the Congressional Budget Office. She stated that “Republicans’ bill would leave millions of people without health insurance.” According to her, these cuts could result in 13.7 million individuals losing coverage.
Further elaborating on May 13, she noted additional barriers imposed by the proposal: “Burdensome paperwork and red tape is designed to keep people from getting health insurance.” McClellan criticized these measures as deliberate obstacles to accessing Medicaid.
Jennifer McClellan has been serving in Congress since replacing Donald McEachin in 2023. She has previously served in both the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she holds degrees from the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia.
