Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, has used her social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and legislative efforts related to federal funding and health care.
On November 8, 2025, McClellan posted: “As we begin November, we are now in the longest government shutdown in American history. Here are some highlights from this week.”
Two days later, on November 10, she criticized Republican leadership for their role in the shutdown: “Forty-one days ago, the Republicans who control the White House, the House and the Senate chose to shut down the government rather than address the health care crisis they created. In doing so, they pit federal workers and those who rely on the services they provide against”
In a subsequent post on November 10, McClellan outlined her position regarding current legislative proposals: “From day one of the 119th Congress, I have stood with House Democrats ready to pass a bipartisan funding bill that meets the needs of the American people, lowers costs and addresses the health care crisis facing this country. The Senate proposal is not that bill. I will vote no.”
Jennifer McClellan began serving as representative for Virginia’s 4th district in 2023 after succeeding Donald McEachin. She previously served in both chambers of Virginia’s legislature—the House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017 and then in the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg in 1972 and currently residing in Richmond at age 50, McClellan holds degrees from both University of Richmond (BA) and University of Virginia (JD).
