Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to criticize Republican-led legislative actions and highlight their potential impact on Virginians.
On October 1, 2025, McClellan wrote that “Hundreds of thousands of Virginians will lose their health insurance due to draconian Medicaid cuts in the Republicans’ Big Ugly Law and their refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act enhanced tax credits. Health care costs for the rest of us will rise and providers will close”. In a separate post on the same day, she addressed broader economic concerns related to a government shutdown: “In Virginia, our economy and communities will be hit especially hard by this shutdown. As the state with the second highest number of federal employees, we will see workers unsure when to expect their next paycheck, small businesses waiting on loans to process and families”.
Continuing her criticism of recent policy changes, McClellan added on October 1: “From a March extension that hurt veterans, seniors and children to the Big Ugly Law that ripped health care and food assistance from millions and now this government shutdown, the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans decided they would rather raise health care”.
Jennifer McClellan has represented Virginia’s 4th District since 2023 after succeeding Donald McEachin. She previously served in both chambers of Virginia’s legislature—the House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017 and later in the Senate. Born in Petersburg in 1972, McClellan currently resides in Richmond. She holds degrees from both the University of Richmond (BA) and University of Virginia (JD).
