Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who represents Virginia’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, has raised concerns over recent mass layoffs announced by the Trump Administration and Vought. In a series of posts on October 10, 2025, McClellan criticized these actions as harmful to federal workers and communities.

In her initial statement, McClellan wrote, “Today’s announced mass layoffs represent the Trump Administration and Vought’s latest illegal attempt to inflict that trauma on our federal workforce. This comes amidst a government shutdown and looming health care crisis of Republicans’ making.” (October 10, 2025)

She continued by highlighting the scale of the layoffs: “Over 200,000 federal workers have already been pushed out of their jobs as a result of Vought’s campaign to traumatize our civil service. This pattern of needless cruelty has left millions uncertain for their lives and livelihoods in the coming weeks and months.” (October 10, 2025)

Addressing local impacts, McClellan stated: “Virginia’s economy and our communities have been hit especially hard this year as the Trump Administration kills jobs and does nothing to address rising costs.

These firings will be contested in court. I stand with our federal workers and will do everything in my power to ensure” (October 10, 2025)

Jennifer McClellan began serving in Congress in 2023 after succeeding Donald McEachin. She previously held positions in both the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006 to 2017 and the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1972, McClellan resides in Richmond. Her academic background includes a BA from the University of Richmond (1994) and a JD from the University of Virginia (1997).
