Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, shared a series of tweets on July 2, 2025. Her posts covered historical reflections and contemporary political issues.
In a tweet posted on July 2, McClellan reflected on a pivotal moment in American history: “On this date in 1776, the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain. The next day, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that July 2nd would be celebrated as the ‘great anniversary festival’ of our new nation and the ‘most memorable epocha’ in American.”
Later that day, McClellan addressed legislative challenges posed by her Republican colleagues. She stated “House Republicans want to pass their Big Ugly Bill without a fight. @TheBlackCaucus and @DemWomenCaucus won’t let them.” She joined forces with members of both caucuses to resist proposed cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, though she noted that “Republicans blocked our effort — knowing full well they.”
Concluding her posts for the day, McClellan affirmed Democratic unity against the proposed legislation: “Today, @HouseDemocrats stand united against the Big Ugly Bill and its cruel and devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP to fund tax cuts for billionaires.”
Jennifer McClellan has served in various political roles over her career. Born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1972, she graduated from the University of Richmond with a BA and earned her JD from the University of Virginia. Before joining Congress, she was part of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006-2017.
