Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, who has been serving in the U.S. Congress representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, has expressed concerns about the potential impacts of proposed legislative changes on health insurance coverage for Virginians. In a series of tweets, she addressed the consequences of the “Big Ugly Bill” and her efforts to preserve access to essential benefits.
On July 2, 2025, McClellan warned that “Under the Big Ugly Bill, over 300k Virginians covered by Cardinal Care could lose their health insurance because of cuts to Medicaid.” She also highlighted that these changes would likely result in increased healthcare costs for others.
Later that day, McClellan shared her participation in a demonstration with members of The Black Caucus. She stated “I stood with members of @TheBlackCaucus to send a message to House Republicans: don’t touch Medicaid and SNAP.” Emphasizing the importance of bipartisan support, she mentioned that only four Republican colleagues were needed to vote against the proposed cuts.
On July 3, McClellan continued her advocacy by highlighting individual stories affected by the bill. She tweeted about Katina Moss, one of many Virginians potentially impacted by the legislation. McClellan remarked “I’m fighting for the over 300,000 Virginians like Katina Moss who could lose their health insurance if the Big Ugly Bill passes.” This tweet included a reference to Moss’s story being shared with local news outlet @8NEWS.
Jennifer McClellan is not only an active political figure but also deeply rooted in Virginia’s community. Born in Petersburg in 1972 and currently residing in Richmond, she holds degrees from both the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia.
