Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, has expressed concerns on social media regarding recent budget proposals affecting key welfare programs. Her comments focus on the impact of potential cuts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid.
On May 21, 2025, McClellan tweeted about the importance of SNAP for Virginians. She stated that “Programs like SNAP keep food on the table for 1 in 11 Virginians for $6 a day.” She emphasized her opposition to significant reductions in these benefits by stating that “These massive SNAP cuts are going to make America hungry again — and House Democrats won’t stand for it.”
Later that same day, McClellan highlighted what she described as unprecedented reductions to Medicaid and SNAP. She remarked on Twitter that “We face the largest Medicaid and SNAP cuts in American history — yet Republicans are jamming this budget bill through the House at lightning fast speed.” The Congresswoman criticized what she perceives as an attempt by Republican lawmakers to obscure the budget details while expediting its passage.
Additionally, McClellan invited her followers to view her complete remarks via a link shared in another tweet posted simultaneously: “Watch my full remarks here: https://t.co/oLmidoUCzr”
Jennifer McClellan has been serving in Congress since replacing Donald McEachin in 2023. Prior to this role, she was a member of both the Virginia House of Delegates from 2006-2017 and the Virginia Senate. Born in Petersburg, Virginia, she holds degrees from both the University of Richmond and University of Virginia.
