Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia’s 4th district since 2023, has been vocal on social media about her opposition to recent legislative measures affecting healthcare and Medicaid. She replaced Donald McEachin in Congress and has a long history of public service, including time in the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate.
On July 3, 2025, McClellan expressed concern over a bill she claims would remove health insurance from nearly 17 million people nationwide, impacting hundreds of thousands in Virginia. She stated that it would also reduce federal support for Medicaid, thereby increasing financial burdens on Virginians who would receive less in return. “This bill rips health insurance away from nearly 17 million people, including hundreds of thousands of Virginians, and slashes federal support for Medicaid, forcing Virginians to foot the bill while getting less.”
In another post made moments later on the same day, McClellan highlighted the broader implications for Virginians if the legislation were passed. She warned that all residents would experience negative effects such as hospital closures, overcrowded emergency rooms, and rising healthcare costs. She reiterated her disapproval by stating that the legislation contradicts what Americans voted for last November and affirmed her vote against it. “Every Virginian will feel the impact — through shuttered hospitals, overcrowded emergency rooms, and rising health care costs across the board.”
On July 4, 2025, McClellan shifted focus to a historical perspective as she reflected on American independence. She emphasized that since its inception in 1776 with a revolutionary idea—that government power comes from the people to protect their rights—America has strived to uphold this ideal despite challenges. As Independence Day was celebrated, she called for continued reflection on these foundational principles. “In 1776, a revolutionary idea was born: that the government derived its power from the people in order to protect their fundamental rights.”
Jennifer McClellan holds a BA from the University of Richmond and a JD from the University of Virginia. Born in Petersburg in 1972 and currently residing in Richmond at age 50, she continues to advocate for her constituents at a national level.
