VCU women’s soccer Head Coach Lauryn Hutchinson announced the elevation of Matt Freibaum to associate head coach in May 2026.
In the previous season, Freibaum contributed to VCU reaching an Atlantic 10 quarterfinal appearance. The team saw improvements in nearly every offensive statistical category and increased both overall and Atlantic 10 win totals compared to the prior season under the first-year staff.
The Rams more than doubled their assist total from 11 to 24 for the season, while also increasing their goal tally from 15 in 2024 to 23. In goalkeeping statistics, VCU made a total of 89 saves, including seven by field players, and recorded the eighth-most single-season saves in program history with 82.
Four players scored three goals each during the campaign. A freshman led the team with six assists in her debut season. Under Freibaum’s guidance, eight Rams netted their first collegiate goals; five of those athletes had multi-goal seasons.
Earlier this spring, as part of preparations for the upcoming year, Hutchinson and her staff announced a recruiting class that adds six new players for the upcoming 2026 season. This group includes five Division I transfers and one member of Costa Rica’s Women’s National Team.
Freibaum and his colleagues are focused on building upon last year’s progress as they look ahead to future seasons. More information about VCU women’s soccer’s 2026 schedule will be released soon.
