Maurice Joseph has rejoined the Richmond Spiders men’s basketball program as an assistant coach, head coach Chris Mooney announced on Apr. 17. Joseph previously served as an assistant for the Spiders during their successful 2021-22 season and returns after four years at Butler.
Joseph’s return is significant for the program, as he was part of the coaching staff that led Richmond to its second Atlantic 10 Tournament title and a run to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2022. His experience and past success with the team are expected to strengthen Richmond’s efforts in upcoming seasons.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be back at Richmond! I am grateful to Coach Mooney for this opportunity and I am looking forward to competing for A-10 championships, like we accomplished during my first stint with the program,” said Joseph.
Mooney said, “Maurice has deep ties to Richmond and the entire Atlantic 10, and I know our program will once again benefit from his experience, his knowledge, and his passion for college basketball. I’m excited to have him back at Richmond and looking forward to having him on our sideline this season.”
Joseph brings over 15 years of college coaching experience, including three seasons as head coach at George Washington University from 2016 through 2019. He also worked as an assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2019-20 before joining George Mason for a season where he contributed to developing Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Tyler Kolek. At Butler, Joseph was responsible for defense coordination along with player development and recruiting duties; he helped secure two postseason berths along with tournament titles such as the Arizona Tip-Off in 2024 and Greenbrier Tip-Off in 2025.
As a player, Joseph had notable achievements leading Vermont University’s team during his final two collegiate seasons—including an America East championship—and started his career at Michigan State appearing in two NCAA Tournaments.
