Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) has announced that the Family Engagement University Kickoff Event will take place on September 16, 2025, at Lakemont Elementary from 6 PM to 8 PM. The event’s theme, “Attendance Matters,” will emphasize the significance of student attendance. Activities planned for the event include raffles, bounce houses, music, and other entertainment. Dinner, child care, and transportation will be provided for attendees. The event is open to both students and parents.
According to PCPS, September is recognized as Attendance Awareness Month. This initiative underscores the importance of consistent student attendance in fostering academic success and preparing students for future endeavors. The school district aims to promote a culture of commitment and achievement with the message that “every student, every day matters.”
Lakemont Elementary School is part of Petersburg City Public Schools and serves kindergarten through fifth grade. The school employs a House System with four houses—Hekima, Uboro, Confianza, and Tikaani—where students and staff remain assigned throughout their time at the school. Students use Chromebooks for instruction while cell phones are required to stay in backpacks during school hours. School hours begin at 8:25 a.m., with breakfast available, and dismissal starts at 3:40 p.m. Attendance is recorded daily, and required immunizations must be completed for enrollment. Visitors must schedule appointments in advance, with transportation information provided through ParentSquare.
PCPS serves approximately 4,400 students across nine schools with a staff of 672 and an annual budget of $70.5 million. The district’s mission is to prepare students to become 21st-century citizens capable of collaboration, communication, and innovation. Its vision focuses on transforming learning opportunities so every student graduates with a wide range of choices. PCPS is governed by a seven-member School Board elected to four-year terms responsible for setting policies, approving staff hires, and overseeing the budget. Superintendent Yolonda Brown leads the district; board meetings are generally held twice monthly and are open to the public.
