Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) has announced TuRhonda Morrison as the new interim supervisor of alternative education programs at Pittman Academy.

According to Pittman Academy, Morrison serves as the interim principal and supervisor of alternative programs at the academy. She brings nearly 30 years of experience in education, having mentored teachers and administrators at both elementary and secondary levels. Her career includes teaching as an adjunct professor at Virginia Union University and holding various district and school-based positions in special education, compliance, and Tier 3 interventions. Morrison is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at Xavier University of Louisiana.

Morrison’s previous roles have included district compliance and instructional coordinator for PCPS’s Department of Special Education, dyslexia advisor and chair for the Virginia Literacy Act, district special projects administrator for Fairfax County Public Schools, adjunct professor at Virginia Union University, and academic intervention specialist in Richmond City Public Schools. Her extensive career spans public and private education across multiple districts including Halifax County, St. Joseph’s Villa-Richmond, Chesterfield County, Fairfax County, and Petersburg City. Her focus has been on postsecondary planning, literacy, and student support.

Pittman Academy is located at 35 Pine St., Petersburg. The academy aims to develop students into critical thinkers with effective communication skills and technology integration capabilities while providing an education that meets individual learning needs and high school diploma standards. It encourages career exploration, positive character development, and problem-solving. The academy’s vision is to inspire students to exceed their own expectations, value themselves and others, and make decisions that positively affect their communities.

PCPS serves approximately 4,400 students across nine schools with a staff of 672 and an annual budget of $70.5 million. According to PCPS, the district’s mission is to prepare students to become 21st-century citizens capable of collaboration, communication, and innovation. Its vision focuses on transforming learning opportunities so every student graduates with a wide range of choices. PCPS is governed by a seven-member School Board elected to four-year terms responsible for setting policies, approving staff hires, and overseeing the budget. Superintendent Yolonda Brown leads the district with board meetings generally held twice monthly open to the public.
