Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) has announced a non-perishable food drive scheduled for Thankful Thursday, November 20, encouraging community participation to support local families in need.

According to PCPS, the collection of non-perishable food donations will take place from Friday, November 14, through Tuesday, November 18. Daily pickups will commence on Monday, November 17, at the end of each day. The items collected from each school site will be delivered to the central office by the district’s Maintenance Department.

Donations such as canned goods, pasta, or peanut butter aim to support families during the holiday season and highlight the spirit of compassion and community. PCPS encourages participation from every school site to ensure that Thankful Thursday becomes a meaningful event for the entire district.

The Facilities and Operations Department of Petersburg City Public Schools provides various services to support the district. Staffed by licensed and experienced personnel, they assist with facility needs and accommodate requests. The department also offers facility rental packages for community use, with applications available online or in person at their office located at 35 Pine Street, Petersburg, VA 23803. Their mission is to maintain safety and security for students and staff at all times.

PCPS serves approximately 4,400 students across nine schools with a staff of 672 and an annual budget of $70.5 million. The district’s mission is to prepare students as 21st-century citizens capable of collaboration, communication, and innovation. Its vision focuses on transforming learning opportunities so every student graduates with a wide range of choices. PCPS is governed by a seven-member School Board elected to four-year terms responsible for setting policies, approving staff hires, and overseeing the budget. Superintendent Yolonda Brown leads the district with board meetings generally held twice monthly and open to the public.
