Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) has announced that the School Board is seeking community members to join its five advisory committees designed to support students and schools.

According to PCPS, these committees include the Career and Technical Education Advisory Committee, which provides input on programs preparing students for careers. This includes curriculum support, workforce connections, and guidance on professional development and funding priorities. The Gifted Advisory Committee reviews and evaluates the local plan for gifted education and advises the School Board on services for formally identified gifted students.

The Parent Advisory Committee focuses on gathering parent input to increase engagement in Title I schools and assists with developing the division’s Title I plan. Members serve as a resource for families and provide perspectives on school processes to support student well-being and education. The School Health Advisory Committee comprises representatives from the community, parents, health professionals, and educators, helping develop and evaluate health policies, programs, and services across the school division.

The Special Education Advisory Committee advises on educating students with disabilities, reviews special education programs, and assists in long-range planning to meet students’ needs. Membership includes parents, community representatives, and individuals with expertise in disability services. According to PCPS, all committee applications are reviewed by the School Board, with selected members notified to participate in supporting educational initiatives, program evaluation, and policy guidance across the district.

PCPS serves approximately 4,400 students across nine schools with a staff of 672 and an annual budget of $70.5 million. The district’s mission is to prepare students to become 21st-century citizens capable of collaboration, communication, and innovation. Its vision focuses on transforming learning opportunities so every student graduates with a wide range of choices. PCPS is governed by a seven-member School Board elected to four-year terms responsible for setting policies, approving staff hires, and overseeing the budget. Superintendent Yolonda Brown leads the district; board meetings are generally held twice monthly and open to the public.
