Peter Plourd, recently named as one of three 2025 inductees to Chesterfield County’s Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame, has devoted much of his life to community service. Plourd’s contributions include volunteering with the county’s Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) and supporting local efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plourd was born and raised on a farm in northern Maine. After enlisting in the Army, he spent about two decades working as a government contractor before moving into the private sector, where he worked in real estate and ran a landscaping and home improvement business. He retired from professional work in 2017.

After retirement, Plourd increased his volunteer activities. He spends several afternoons each week at Chesterfield County’s MRC Branch within the Virginia Department of Health building. There, he assists residents who come in for services.

Plourd also volunteers as a starter at Sycamore Golf Course, combining his interest in golf with his desire to help others. In addition to this role, he is trained through CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), where he teaches public education classes such as CPR, emergency preparedness, and first aid.

“Between CERT, MRC, and the golf club, I keep busy,” Plourd said.

His involvement extends beyond these activities. He has served as treasurer for multiple homeowners associations and participates actively at Manakin Episcopal Church on various committees and as a Eucharist Minister. While his sons were involved in Cub Scouts, Plourd held leadership positions within that organization as well.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Plourd volunteered extensively at outdoor testing centers and vaccine clinics—a commitment that often required long hours throughout the week.

“It was early morning to late in the day, five days a week,” he said regarding his time during the pandemic response effort.

Reflecting on being inducted into the Senior Volunteer Hall of Fame (SVHOF), Plourd commented: “It’s quite an honor… When you look at the bios of all the 16 [nominees], it’s just really amazing.”
