Track and field jumper Philip Daniel was awarded the Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship for Virginia Commonwealth University, according to a May 7 announcement. This marks the second consecutive year that a VCU track athlete has received this recognition.
The Atlantic 10 awards these scholarships each year to student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically, providing support for their postgraduate studies. Since 2015, one representative from each member institution has been selected annually. Over the past five years, the conference has distributed $350,000 in scholarships to 66 former student-athletes.
Daniel distinguished himself during his four years at VCU with two A-10 medals, three triple jump victories, and by setting a program record in the triple jump with a mark of 15.92 meters at the Virginia Challenge during the 2026 outdoor season. This performance ranks as the best in program history and is also listed as the twenty-sixth best in Division I and tenth in the NCAA East region.
At recent championships, Daniel won silver after finishing second in the triple jump with a distance of 15.64 meters at Outdoor Championships and set a personal record of 7.35 meters in long jump for sixth place. He also earned gold at A-10 Indoor Championships with a then-program-record triple jump of 15.66 meters.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Daniel serves as President of VCU’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which aims to develop and enhance student-athlete experiences while fostering collaboration and leadership on campus and within the community. Academically, he was named to both USTFCCCA (2025) and A-10 All-Academic teams (2026) after maintaining a GPA of 3.54 in Business Management.
Daniel becomes only the fourth track & field athlete from VCU to receive this scholarship since its inception—joining Eryn Byrd (2025), Taylor McCormick (2018), and Kiara Porter (2015). With this award, he plans to pursue a master’s degree at VCU’s Center for Sports Leadership.
