City of Richmond offices and services will be closed on Monday, October 13, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. City Hall and all city offices will resume regular hours on Tuesday, October 14.
Trash and bulk collection services will not operate on Monday. Collections will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week, with Monday pickups moving to Tuesday and continuing through Friday. The East Richmond Road Convenience Center landfill at 3800 East Richmond Road will remain open on Saturday, October 11, but will be closed on the holiday. It will reopen on Tuesday.
Recycling services will continue as scheduled on Monday. All branches of Richmond Public Libraries will be closed for the day and will reopen on Tuesday.
RVA311 services will be available on Saturday, October 11, but closed on the holiday. Residents can still use self-service options online and via mobile apps at any time.
Richmond Public Schools will not hold classes on October 13; however, RPS offices will remain open. Students are expected to return on Tuesday.
All Parks and Recreation offices and community centers will be closed Monday. The Department of Public Utilities Call Center is also closed; for emergencies, customers should call 804-646-4646 and select Option 1 or dial 911 in case of gas leaks.
Richmond Animal Care and Control will close on Monday and reopen by appointment only on Tuesday. Regular walk-in hours resume Wednesday.
A joint proclamation from the Mayor and City Council in October 2022 officially established Richmond Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor Indigenous Peoples in the community and recognize the city’s founding on Indigenous lands.
“The resolution and holiday honor the Indigenous Peoples living in our communities and acknowledge the City’s founding and history on Indigenous lands,” according to city officials.
The Pocahontas Project organizes an annual celebration for Richmond Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The Library of Virginia offers a collection focusing on Indigenous perspectives, while Native Land Digital provides resources to help identify local Indigenous territories.
