John Ditto, a doctor at Richmond Breathe Free Sinus & Allergy Centers, said that sinusitis-related inflammation can block the eustachian tube, causing fluid to accumulate behind the eardrum and potentially leading to infections. He shared this insight on Instagram on March 26.

“Sinusitis can cause inflammation in the nose,” said Ditto, according to Instagram. “That inflammation can cause swelling at the eustachian tube. If that becomes blocked, fluid can build up behind the eardrum. Bacteria trapped in that fluid can become an infection.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, ear infections are often triggered by illnesses like colds, flu, or allergies, which cause congestion and swelling in the nasal passages, throat, and eustachian tubes. This inflammation can block the eustachian tubes, preventing proper drainage and allowing fluid to accumulate in the middle ear. If fluid becomes trapped, it can become infected by bacteria or viruses, resulting in an ear infection.

The National Library of Medicine reports that eustachian tube dysfunction disrupts pressure regulation in the ear and can lead to symptoms like ear fullness and hearing loss. Sinus infections or allergies often contribute to this dysfunction. When fluid accumulates behind the eardrum, it creates an environment conducive to bacterial growth, potentially leading to acute ear infections.
