Dr. John Ditto, an ENT Specialist at Richmond Breathe Free, said that sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses caused by infections, allergies, or irritants, with treatments depending on the cause. This statement was made on the Richmond Breathe Free Instagram.

“Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses caused by infections, allergies, or irritants,” said John Ditto, according to Instagram. “Symptoms include facial pain, nasal congestion, headache, cough, and thick mucus. It can be acute or chronic with treatment depending on the cause. Treatments include nasal sprays, decongestants, or antibiotics for bacterial infections.”

According to the National Library of Medicine, sinusitis is characterized by inflammation of the sinus or nasal passages and can be triggered by various factors, including infections, allergies, and environmental irritants. Allergic rhinitis is a common precursor, leading to inflammation of the sinus mucosa and obstruction of sinus drainage pathways, thereby creating favorable conditions for bacterial growth. Environmental irritants such as air pollutants have also been implicated in the development of sinusitis by inducing mucosal inflammation and impairing mucociliary clearance.

If at-home remedies or medications do not resolve Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD), a doctor might recommend surgical treatment. One option is eustachian tuboplasty, also known as eustachian tube balloon dilation. This surgery involves a doctor inserting a small balloon through the nasal passage into the eustachian tube and then inflating it. The balloon remains inflated for about two minutes before being deflated and removed. Patients typically recover from this surgery within one day.

As reported by the National Library of Medicine, sinusitis is classified based on the duration of symptoms: acute sinusitis lasts less than four weeks, subacute spans four to twelve weeks, and chronic sinusitis persists for more than twelve weeks. Chronic sinusitis can be further categorized into chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps, chronic sinusitis without nasal polyps, and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis, each with distinct pathophysiological mechanisms. Accurate classification is essential for guiding appropriate treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes.

According to Richmond Breathe Free’s website, Dr. Ditto earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, where he was recognized for his research. He then received specialized training in ear, nose, and throat disorders at the University of Michigan’s Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
