The City of Richmond is observing Older Americans Month this May, in alignment with the national theme for 2025, “Flipping the Script on Aging.” This annual celebration, initiated in 1963 and led by the Administration on Aging under the Administration for Community Living, aims to honor older Americans’ contributions and reaffirm support for them nationwide.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of meaningful relationships and social connections in enhancing older adults’ health, well-being, and independence. It underscores how staying socially connected can mitigate isolation and loneliness, allowing seniors to age with dignity.

Richmond’s Office of Aging and Disability Services will feature various community programs designed to foster social engagement. These include book clubs, health initiatives, and educational workshops covering topics like health benefits and legal rights. These efforts align with Richmond’s mission to help older adults remain active and informed community members.

Mayor Danny Avula stated: “In Richmond, we believe that every generation deserves to be seen, heard, and supported. Older Adults Month is a time to honor the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of our seniors—who have helped shape the fabric of our city. By investing in their well-being, we’re not just supporting individuals—we’re strengthening our entire community.”

As Richmond’s older adult population grows, the city continues its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where residents of all ages can thrive through connection.
