The Richmond City School Board has decided to extend Superintendent Jason Kamras’s contract for an additional four years, ensuring his tenure through June 30, 2029. The decision was reached with a vote of 8-1.

Kamras, who began his role with Richmond Public Schools on February 1, 2018, expressed gratitude for the extension. “Serving as RPS Superintendent has been the greatest professional honor of my life,” Kamras stated. He acknowledged the progress made under his leadership but emphasized the ongoing work needed to prepare students for future success.

The board’s decision followed a review of Kamras’s performance in areas such as academic outcomes and leadership during pivotal challenges. They highlighted improvements in school accreditation, early literacy scores, and graduation rates during his tenure. These achievements were seen as a solid foundation for future progress.

The board outlined ambitious goals moving forward, including ensuring all third graders read at grade level and increasing on-time graduation rates. Additionally, they aim to develop Virginia’s leading educator workforce and modernize school facilities.

“The full Board is united in holding Superintendent Kamras to high standards over the next four years,” said the Richmond City School Board. They stressed their commitment to providing every student in Richmond with access to quality education.

Kamras’s extension represents both a partnership and a commitment to accountability as they strive toward excellence in education for all students within the district.
