The Richmond Department of Public Works (DPW) has installed a new traffic signal at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Pepper Avenue. The new signal will be activated on August 26, initially operating in flash mode to allow drivers time to adjust.

During this period, drivers on Patterson Avenue will see a flashing yellow light and should proceed with caution. Those traveling on Pepper Avenue will encounter flashing red lights, which require stopping and yielding before moving forward. The signal is scheduled to become fully operational as a standard traffic light on September 2.

The project began in January 2025 and includes several safety improvements such as mast arm poles with high-visibility backplates, countdown pedestrian signals with push buttons, ADA-compliant ramps connected to new sidewalks, and marked crosswalks designed for better pedestrian safety.

Residents are reminded to remain alert when navigating the intersection during the transition phase. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution while everyone adapts to the changes and always watch for pedestrians and cyclists.

According to city officials: “Part of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance roadway safety and accessibility for all users, the Department of Public Works (DPW) installed a new traffic signal at the intersection of Patterson Avenue and Pepper Avenue. It will be energized August 26 and temporarily placed in flash mode.”
