The City of Richmond has introduced a new web-based progress tracker aimed at providing transparency and accountability in the overhaul of its purchasing card (p-card) program. This initiative follows a reset of the program earlier this year, with efforts focused on rebuilding it based on industry best practices to ensure fiscal responsibility and public trust.
Mayor Danny Avula emphasized the importance of government accountability, stating, “We know that government accountability must be earned, every day.” He added that the city didn’t just pause the p-card program but took measures to create a more robust and transparent system. The newly launched tracker is intended to involve the public in this process by offering real-time updates on improvements being made.
The tracker serves as a centralized source for news related to the program’s rebuild. It will feature announcements, press releases, and status updates on key reform processes such as recruitment for new personnel, policy implementation changes, and training material updates.
Rene Almaraz, Director of the Department of Procurement Services, highlighted that “the new p-card program will have rigorous guardrails, comprehensive user training, and clear lines of accountability.” Almaraz noted that the tracker adds another layer of transparency as they work to address areas not effectively serving Richmond residents.
