The City of Richmond has unveiled a public speed data dashboard, providing comprehensive citywide speed data accessible via its Vision Zero webpage. Mayor Danny Avula emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating: “As promised at the Speed Management Symposium in May, we’re making citywide speed data public for the first time. This is about delivering on our commitment to transparency and giving residents clear, accessible information about driver behavior on Richmond’s streets. It’s a critical step toward building trust and making our streets safer for everyone.”

The speed data, collected through cell phones and vehicle GPS systems, will aid in engineering, enforcement, and education efforts. The interactive online dashboard displays the most recent two months of speed data.

Richmond Fire Marshall William Spindle commented on the significance of managing traffic speeds: “Managing traffic speeds helps ensure our first responders can reach emergencies more safely.” He added that as a member of the Vision Zero Task Force, he is encouraged by the public availability of this data which shows the effects of traffic calming measures and identifies areas along the High Injury Network needing improvements.

Residents, advocates, and researchers are invited to explore these resources on rva.gov/visionzero. For further details on the Department of Public Works (DPW), visit rva.gov/public-works or email askpublicworks@rva.gov.

The DPW is among 195 accredited public works agencies in the U.S., offering services such as leaf collection; street maintenance; trash collection; recycling; parking enforcement; urban forestry; street signs; traffic signals and civil engineering. They also manage permits for working in city rights-of-way and maintain city buildings.
