Mayor Danny Avula of Richmond has nominated Odie Donald II as the new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the city. This decision follows a five-month national search that began shortly after Mayor Avula assumed office on January 1.
“Odie Donald is a talented and experienced public administrator with a compelling life story that speaks to Richmond’s highest aspirations,” said Mayor Avula. He emphasized Donald’s commitment to effective public management and his vision for a thriving Richmond.
Donald, currently serving as Chief of Staff to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, expressed his gratitude for the nomination. “I’m deeply honored by Mayor Danny Avula’s trust in me to serve the people of Richmond as Chief Administrative Officer,” he stated, highlighting his career focus on building strong teams and fostering economic development.
Donald brings nearly two decades of experience in municipal government, having held leadership roles across Georgia. In his current role in Atlanta, he provides strategic guidance on policy issues and has overseen major investments exceeding $1.6 billion. His past positions include City Administrator for South Fulton and Augusta-Richmond County, where he managed significant financial and developmental initiatives.
Community leaders have shown support for Donald’s nomination. Brian Anderson, President and CEO of ChamberRVA, noted Donald’s leadership qualities as essential for strengthening ties between the city and its business community. Tanya González, a Richmond resident, praised Donald’s proven leadership in diverse municipal settings.
The expedited resolution for Donald’s appointment will be introduced at the June 9 City Council meeting, with a proposed start date of July 9.
