The University of Richmond men’s lacrosse team defeated Delaware 17–5 in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Robins Stadium on March 14.
The win is significant as it marks the third consecutive season that Richmond has started conference play with a victory. The Spiders, ranked No. 2 in several national polls, continued their strong performance this season and extended their best start in program history to seven wins without a loss.
Aidan O’Neil led Richmond’s offense with one goal and four assists, reaching a career milestone by scoring his 100th goal late in the second quarter. He became only the fifth player in program history to reach this mark. Gavin Creo contributed three goals and one assist, while Lucas Littlejohn, Cole Hayden, and Leo Caine each scored twice. In total, sixteen different players recorded at least one point for Richmond.
Goalkeeper Connor Knight made eight saves and assisted on O’Neil’s milestone goal. The Spiders held Delaware to just one goal through the first three quarters of play. Freshmen Cole Hayden and Gus Abrecht both scored their first collegiate goals during the game.
This match was the first-ever meeting between Richmond and Delaware after Delaware joined the Atlantic 10 ahead of the current season. With this win, Richmond improved its all-time conference record to 54–12 and its Atlantic 10 record to 14–2.
Richmond will next play UMass on Saturday, March 21.
