The University of Richmond men’s tennis team defeated No. 4 seed George Mason 4-0 on Apr. 23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, advancing to the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.
This victory marks an important step for Richmond, who improved their spring record to 15-8 and extended their winning streak to eight matches. The Spiders will now face top-seeded VCU in the next round of the tournament.
Richmond secured an early lead by winning two out of three doubles matches. Davis Wiley and Cole Brashear claimed a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Grant Cohen and Charlie Burdell clinched another point with a 6-4 result at No. 3 doubles. Although George Mason won on court two, Richmond carried momentum into singles play.
In singles competition, Brashear was first off court with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. Dylan Atkinson followed with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4) on court four before Otto Sewell sealed the match for Richmond by defeating his opponent at No.5 singles (6-3, 6-3). Matches on courts one through three were left unfinished as Richmond had already secured enough points for the overall win.
According to match notes provided by Richmond athletics staff, this marks the fourth time in program history that the Spiders have reached the Atlantic 10 semifinals during spring play.
Looking ahead, Richmond is set to compete against VCU in the semifinal round scheduled for Friday morning at the same venue.
