The University of Richmond men’s tennis team defeated Howard University 4-0 on April 10 at the Westhampton Tennis Complex. With this win, Richmond’s record improved to 10-8 for the spring season, while Howard dropped to 1-11.

The match is significant as it strengthens Richmond’s position in the current season and highlights strong performances from several players. The result also reflects the team’s momentum heading into their next matches.

Richmond secured the doubles point by winning matches on courts three and two. Charlie Burdell and Grant Cohen won their match with a score of 6-1, followed by Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner clinching another victory with a score of 6-4. The top doubles match was left unfinished with Cole Brashear and Davis Wiley leading.

In singles play, Burdell extended Richmond’s lead with a dominant win (6-0, 6-1) on court two. Dylan Atkinson followed up with a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-2) on court four. Otto Sewell then secured the overall team win for Richmond by defeating his opponent (6-2, 6-3) on court five. Several other singles matches were unfinished when the team result was decided.

According to updated records provided after the match, Davis Wiley holds a singles record of 13 wins and three losses this spring; Burdell has recorded eleven wins; Sewell has seven; Atkinson has three dual singles victories so far this season.

Looking ahead, Richmond will host Hampton in their next match scheduled for Saturday at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
