Richmond, VA – The City of Richmond’s Department of Public Works (DPW) is preparing to host a Speed Management Symposium on May 22, aiming to address the issue of speeding in the city. Scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Main Street Station, this event will highlight the city’s efforts to promote safer streets and public participation.

Attendees of the symposium will learn about various initiatives, such as the Safety Camera Program, which targeted school zones on high injury street networks last year. Over 63,000 instances of speeding in these zones were recorded during school arrival and dismissal times.

The symposium will feature presentations on broad topics such as Vision Zero and Richmond Connects, alongside discussions on roadway safety projects and insights from the Richmond Police. Additional information will be available at various booths representing city departments and organizations like VDOT and Bike Walk RVA. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session.

To enhance visitor experience, the event will offer refreshments, with RSVPs recommended via the city’s website.

The Richmond Department of Public Works is among the 195 accredited public works agencies in the United States, handling a range of services from street maintenance to urban forestry. The department is integral to the city’s transport and infrastructure management, and it coordinates alongside the Safe and Healthy Streets Commission (SHSC).

Established in 1966, the SHSC advises the Richmond City Council on transportation safety matters, focusing on reducing traffic-related fatalities and injuries to zero by 2030. The SHSC supports the Vision Zero Action Plan and the Safe System approach, promoting a culture of safety through strategic planning and implementation.

More information about the DPW and its services is available on their official website or by contacting them directly.

Several city representatives, including a city council member, the Chief of Police, and the Director of Public Works, contribute to the SHSC’s diverse membership, alongside transportation safety professionals and other stakeholders.
