The Richmond Police Department announced on May 23 the launch of Operation Safe Summer, a joint initiative with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies aimed at reducing violent crime and increasing public safety in Richmond.

Operation Safe Summer will run through early September and is part of Chief Rick Edwards’ ‘Hotspot’ location strategy. This approach targets areas with high concentrations of gun violence reports by increasing officer presence and focused enforcement. The operation will also use research to direct resources where they are most needed.

The initiative involves several partnerships. Virginia State Police will provide troopers and patrol cars within the city, focusing on hotspot areas. Federal partners including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives; the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the United States Department of Justice; and the United States Marshals Service will work together with Richmond police to identify, investigate, and prosecute key drivers of gun violence.

Local agencies such as the Richmond Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney will assist in investigations and prosecutions connected to Operation Safe Summer. Community organizations like Richmond Community Mediators, RPD Chaplain program, Trauma Healing and Response Network, ChildSavers, Communities in Schools, as well as city departments including Justice Services are also involved. The Gun Violence Prevention and Intervention Steering Committee continues its work via a dedicated hotline for community members.

Community engagement is another component of this strategy. RPD Community Pop-Up events offer activities for families to help prevent violent crime; one such event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26 at Lucks Field community on U Street. Command Staff Community Walks are held monthly to foster relationships between police leadership and residents.

Chief Rick Edwards said: “We have a citywide strategy to help ensure a safer summer for everyone in Richmond. We are grateful to our city agencies and community partners for bringing their energy, expertise, and commitment to this effort. Most importantly, the role of the community is essential. By working together we can make this a safer summer for all.”

As part of its efforts around firearm safety education during Operation Safe Summer, RPD has used American Rescue Plan grant funding to provide gun safes free-of-charge upon request by calling (804) 516-0451.

Additional youth programs include low-cost summer camps from Parks Recreation & Community Facilities (PRCF) as well as “Late Night Gym” sessions beginning June 12 at three locations across Richmond.
