The Richmond Spiders men’s golf team shot a seven-under-par in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, tying for second place with Virginia Commonwealth University at one-over-par (577) on Apr. 28. The event is taking place in Orlando, Florida.
This result puts the Spiders and Rams just behind George Mason, who leads the twelve-team field at three-under-par (573). The team’s performance was highlighted by every player shooting par or better during Tuesday’s round.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron led Richmond with a three-under-par score of 69, finishing atop the individual leaderboard at seven-under-par (137). He holds a one-shot lead over VCU’s Carson Looney and is four shots ahead of other competitors. “Rizo-Patron sank an eight-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to shoot 69 (-3) and grab a one-shot lead atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under par (137),” according to the team statement. Richmond’s last conference championship medalist was Danny Pizetoski in 2014.
Carson Baez improved his score with a three-under-par round of 69 after opening with a three-over-par score of 75, moving into a tie for twelfth place overall. Baez recorded four birdies and only one bogey. Quin Polin is currently tied for eighth at one-under-par after shooting a one-under round that included four birdies but also featured both double and single bogeys.
Junior Jack LaPiana recovered from his previous performance by playing his final fifteen holes in three under par, carding an even par round that moved him up nine shots from Monday’s total. Senior Drew Carlin joined the lineup before Round Two and contributed an even par performance as well.
The Spiders have made thirty-eight birdies through two rounds—the most among all teams competing this week. They will be paired with VCU and George Mason in Wednesday’s final round, which begins off the first tee starting at 8:15 AM.
