Richmond women’s tennis falls to Cal State Fullerton despite early doubles success

The University of Richmond women’s tennis team lost 5-2 to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday afternoon at Titan Courts in Fullerton, California. With this result, Richmond’s record for the spring season stands at 2-7, while Cal State Fullerton improves to 10-2.

Richmond started strong by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Lainey O’Neil and Lucy Webber defeated Seha Yu and Martina Markov 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Beatriz Guerra and Elizabeth Novak clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Amelia Zylberman and Milena Gevorgyan on court three. The top doubles match between Sofia Barbulescu/Abby Lee and Chloe Schwarz/Emilie Lugon-Moulin was tied at 4-4 when play stopped.

In singles competition, Cal State Fullerton won five out of six matches to claim the overall victory. Martina Markov opened singles play with a decisive win over Sofia Barbulescu, followed by Chloe Schwarz defeating Lainey O’Neil on court six. Emilie Lugon-Moulin beat Elizabeth Novak at No. 2 singles, while Milena Gevorgyan added another point against Beatriz Guerra on court five.

Richmond’s only singles win came from Lucy Webber, who came back from a set down to defeat Seha Yu in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 7-6 [7-5]) on court four. The final match saw Amelia Zylberman edge Abby Lee in a close contest (1-6, 6-4, 1-0 [10-3]).

After this match, Richmond will continue its road trip in California with matches against UC Irvine on Tuesday and CSUN on Friday.

Singles records for Richmond players after this match are: Sofia Barbulescu (3-6), Lara Bakhaya (1-2), Elizabeth Novak (1-8), Beatriz Guerra (2-7), Abby Lee (3-6), Lucy Webber (5-4), and Lainey O’Neil (2-4). In doubles, combinations have seen mixed results; O’Neil/Webber lead with a record of 2-1.
