Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia has addressed the controversy surrounding Democratic Attorney General candidate Jay Jones’s past violent messages, describing them as “indefensible” but maintaining his support for Jones. This statement was made in a press release, where Kaine cited their 25-year acquaintance and Jones’s apology.

“Jay has apologized,” said Kaine, U.S. Senator (D). “The statements that he made were indefensible. I’ve known Jay Jones for 25 years, and I think those statements were not in character. I wish other people in public life would sincerely apologize for stuff so, no, I still am a supporter.”

According to The Hill, Kaine’s comments on Jones’s 2022 text messages about former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert have intensified discussions within the Democratic Party regarding loyalty and accountability. Republicans have criticized Kaine’s stance as inconsistent with party ethics.

As reported by National Review, screenshots of Jones’s 2022 texts showed him writing that Gilbert “receives both bullets.” The authenticity of these messages was verified through timestamps and images sent to Delegate Carrie Coyner. These materials were later used by Virginia news outlets and officials responding to the controversy.

WSET reports that polling conducted after the emergence of these texts indicated a decline in support for Jones among Virginia Democrats. Meanwhile, GOP leaders increased their criticism, and some Democrats questioned Kaine’s continued backing of Jones. Commentary highlighted growing divisions within the party as the fallout from the story continued.

The official U.S. Senate site notes that Senator Tim Kaine has represented Virginia since 2013 and serves on several committees including Armed Services, Foreign Relations, HELP (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions), and Budget. A former governor and lieutenant governor, Kaine has emphasized ethics, accountability, and civility in politics throughout his career.

According to Senate.gov, Virginia’s U.S. Senate delegation—comprising Democrats Mark Warner and Tim Kaine—holds significant influence over state political discourse through endorsements, fundraising efforts, and public statements. Their high visibility often shapes responses to controversies involving Virginia Democrats seeking statewide office.
