Seven Richmond Athletics programs earned perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores of 1,000, according to an NCAA update released on May 5. The field hockey, men’s cross-country, men’s golf, soccer, women’s basketball, women’s golf, and women’s swimming and diving teams all achieved the highest possible APR score for the four-year period that includes data through the 2024-25 academic year.
This marks the most Spider teams with perfect APR scores since May 2019, when data through the 2017-18 school year was released. The achievement ties Richmond’s previous record for most programs reaching this milestone since the NCAA began tracking APR in 2003.
In addition to these seven programs earning perfect scores—one more than last year—14 Richmond teams received APR marks above their respective Division I sport averages. All sixteen Spider teams (with indoor and outdoor track & field counted as one team) posted scores of at least 975. This is well above the NCAA minimum requirement of 930.
The four-year Academic Progress Rates for each Richmond Athletics program were listed: Field Hockey (1,000), Men’s Cross Country (1,000), Men’s Golf (1,000), Women’s Basketball (1,000), Women’s Golf (1,000), Soccer (1,000), Swimming & Diving (1,000), Women’s Lacrosse (998), Baseball (997), Women’s Cross Country (992), Men’s Lacrosse (991), Men’s Basketball (989), Women’s Track (989), Men’s Tennis (981), Football (980) and Women’s Tennis (975).
Each year Division I sports teams calculate their APR using a formula where scholarship student-athletes can earn one point per term for remaining eligible and another point for staying in school or graduating. For non-scholarship schools or sports, recruited student-athletes are tracked similarly.
The NCAA’s Academic Performance Program sets measurable goals to help ensure schools support student-athletes’ academic success by providing necessary tools and resources.
