Southampton Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center ranked as the second largest nursing home in Richmond City County during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The facility offered a total of 195 beds, which is 51 more than the county average for that period. On average, Southampton assisted 178.3 residents per day in the quarter.

With an overall CMS rating of 2 out of 5, the center falls below the state’s nursing home average of 3.

Among Richmond City County facilities, Sitter and Barfoot Veterans Care Center led with 200 beds available, while Forest Hill Health & Rehabilitation followed Southampton as third with 174 beds available.

According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the nation’s older adult demographic keeps increasing, while younger groups continue to decline. Between 2020 and 2024, the 65-and-older population grew by 13%, compared to a 1.7% decrease among those under 18. Nationally, the older adult population expanded substantially over the past century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that nearly 28 million individuals in this age group—almost half—are expected to need long-term services and supports. The study also projects that more than a third may require nursing home care in the future.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
